A disused factory at Xewkija industrial estate started a new lease of life today at a service centre of HSBC Malta employing 50 full-time workers.
The building was revamped in an 800,000 euro investment which drew praise from IT minister Austin Gatt, who said the government is working on plans for the whole Xewkija industrial estate to be converted into a services hub.
The service centre was inaugurated by Dr Gatt, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and HSBC chief executive Shaun Wallis.
Dr Gatt praised Mr Wallis for his confidence in Gozo and its workers and also praised HSBC for having heralded modern banking in Malta.
The service centre will handle the bank's back office work and also serve as a call centre for outgoing calls from HSBC Malta. It will have annual recurrent operational costs of some 1.2 million euros.
