A repeat offender who confessed that he is a drug addict and has been on drugs for the past 10 years, was jailed for two-and-a-half years after he pleaded guilty to stealing a car stereo, cash and possessing a sharp and pointed instrument without a licence.

Jesmond Portelli, 37, from Zejtun, pleaded guilty, to stealing the car stereo, €123 in cash and causing €1,164.69 (Lm500) in damage to the Subaru car in Kalkara. Mr Portelli also pleaded guilty to breaching the conditions of a conditional discharge and to relapsing.

Police Inspector Anthony Cassar told the court that Mr Portelli has a long list of previous convictions and has been a drug user for more than 10 years.

Before handing down judgment, Magistrate Silvio Meli took into consideration that Mr Portelli had never taken advantage of the chances given to him to reform and he had cooperated with police in their investigations.

Police Inspector Anthony Cassar prosecuted.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for Mr Portelli as legal aid.
