Two environmental NGOs expressed relief yesterday following the decision to turn down the Otters' ASC development application at Marsalforn as well as the attempts to remove a scrapyard in Birżebbugia.

In a statement, Flimkien għal-Ambjent Aħjar and the Ramblers' Association said they appreciated that common sense had prevailed among all board members thereby safeguarding public access along the coastline, retaining intact what remains of the coastal character of the area and preserving the centuries-old salt pans on this site.

At the same time, the NGOs noted the efforts being made to remove a scrapyard from its "shameful illegal position" at Wied Żembaq to a nearby industrial area where it will be suitably located.
