Marsascala marina controversy

Marsascala mayor Mario Calleja has done it again. He has committed both the Labour Party and the local council in favour of a yacht marina in Marasascala Bay. Yet the local council never discussed this matter.

The Għaqda Indipendenti Marsascala, in its 2006 election manifesto, had declared itself in favour of such organised marinas after due consultation and dialogue. Our jetties definitely need upgrading - the maze of boat moorings and the contamination from fuel spillages are making it impossible for swimmers and fishermen to enjoy the bay.

Now it seems that some senior MLP official has taken Mr Calleja to task for declaring himself in favour of a marina in Marsascala, as the mayor also represents the party. For this reason the Rotin family are justified in wanting to know where the MLP stands on this issue.

GIM, together with the Rotin family and the other residents of Marsascala, insist that the MLP pronounce itself, before the general election, as to whether Marsascala should opt for a marina as the Labour mayor, Mr Calleja, has done. It would not surprise GIM were the MLP leadership to wash its hands of this controversy as it has done in the case of the Sant'Antnin waste recycling plant.
