Underground mill to reopen for visitors

An underground emergency flour mill built in the 1950s and restored to working order will be reopened for visits this Friday and Saturday.

The mill, on the way down from Xemxija to Mistra, is maintained by Fondazzjoni Wirt Industrijali. It was also opened for viewing a few weeks ago and drew hundreds of visitors.

Six such emergency flour mills had been built (to enable Malta to hold out in case of war) but this is the only one in good working order, even though it was abandoned for after 25 years.

Entrance to the mill is through a 70-foot tunnel which leads to a large cavern having three floors. The mill is buried under four storeys of rock.

It will be opened on Friday between 5-7 p.m. and on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The entrance is on the main street at Triq Mistra (on the way to Mellieha), 100 meters down the former Mistra Village tennis court. Parking space is available near the fire station, a walking distance of two minutes away. There is no entrance fee.
