Plastic bottles should be squashed before being disposed at bring-in sites, as this saves three times as much space, WasteServ said yesterday.

Since plastic is one of the most popular kinds of waste being separated at source and disposed of, extra bins for plastic are being placed at the 200 bring-in sites around the islands.

In 2007, 500,470 kilogrammes of plastic were collected from the sites, nearly double the previous year's total.

Each bottle is currently being sorted by hand at the temporary facility at Marsa until the Sant'Antnin waste treatment plant resumes its operations later this month. The bottles are then sent for recycling.
