A loggerhead turtle is being cared for at Fort San Lucjan after having been rescued close to a fishing floater with a hook in its beak.
BICREF, the Biological Conservation Research Foundation said the turtle was spotted by the crew of a launch who promptly named it Naomi and handed it to Manoel Island Marina employees. They transported it to San Lucjan, where other turtles are receiving similar attention

BICREF said it wanted to stress the importance of such prompt and caring action to help this legally protected species.

"Unfortunately as turtles approach our coast, they may be hit by jet-skis and speed boats as they surface to bask in the sun and to breathe.

"Increasing marine pollution, plastics and various fishing activities do not help either."

The foundation said it had noted an increasing number of turtle deaths last summer
