Sant expects to meet Euro Parliament Socialist head in Malta this month

Opposition leader Alfred Sant has written to Martin Schulz, president of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, thanking him for his best wishes and looking forward to meeting him in Malta later this morning.

The following was Dr Sant's letter:

"Thank you very much for your kind letter wishing me a good recovery following the surgery I undertook recently. Your good wishes are not only much appreciated but help to encourage me further to get over the recovery period speedily and soon fully join once again in the political give and take.

The coming election campaign is going to be a very important test for the Maltese and I deeply believe that this time, Labour will acquire their trust to bring about much needed change. In this connection the moral support of all our socialist friends in Europe is most welcome.

"I look forwad to meeting you and our other colleagues of the Socialist Group when you visit Malta later this month and meanwhile, we all of us remain at your disposal to make your visit a huge success."

In his letter Mr Schulz said:

"Dear Alfred,

I have let some time go by after being informed about the major surgery you underwent, in order to leave you the necessary privacy.

I know that you are recovering fast and well, and that you will be back in your job at the helm of the Labour Party very soon.

I am certain that your determination, together with the skill of the medical team that took care of you, and the warmth of the many people who care about you made it possible to achieve a positive result in such a short time.

Together with my colleagues of the Bureau, I will be in Malta later this month for an important meeting that will confirm that the Socialist Group in the European Parliament values highly the contribution of the Malta Labour Party and its Delegation, and considers you as an essential partner.

I look forward to the next months that will see you lead the Malta Labour Party into the next general elections which, I believe, you will win. We are eager to have you as a Socialist Prime Minister in the European Council.

Once again, all the best for a speedy recovery."
