The Social Communication Commission reviews and judges around 200 films a year. It publishes its comments and decisions in Maltese on page 18 in the weekly newspaper GensIllum. The Sunday Times also publishes the SCC film certificates. SCC is grateful for the space provided.

On December 31, Joseph Bonett Balzan wrote a letter stating that since the SCC did not comment on the background of the novel and its contents and aspirations, the SCC is unreliable.

SCC is aware of the contents and criteria of all films reviewed. It judges a film after it has viewed it on the criterion of truth and Truth (Jesus Christ).

A film is, on its own, a distinct work of art and it is judged solely on its own merits. The book, novel, story, fantasy, upon which the film may be based, is another genre of art. It is not the competence of the SCC.

Mr Bonett Balzan should have watched carefully The Golden Compass. Otherwise, his comments would be unfair and unethical. If he never saw the film, his comments are irrelevant.

Any comments from the readers or film viewing public can be forwarded to films@mediacentre.org.mt.

May I take this opportunity to thank the SCC film reviewers for the sterling work they carry out in silence and with diligence, and the silent public who appreciates the service.

Good viewing for the year 2008.
