Police fire warning shot in car chase

A man was arrested after a dramatic car chase in Zabbar which saw the police fire a warning shot and a car crash into a police vehicle.

The police said the incident happened in the late afternoon. Policemen from the mobile squad stopped and were about to check a car when the driver suddenly drove off at high speed.

The police gave chase and, after several failed attempts to stop the car, a warning shot was fired in the air. The police also surrounded the area to block the car and avoid further incidents.

The suspect vehicle crashed against a centre strip in Hompesch Gate Street and then reversed onto a police car which tried to block its path. It was at this stage that the police managed to stop the vehicle and arrest a man, 46, of San Gwann, who was in it. Drug-related items were found in his possession, the police said.

No one was injured in the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
