Copyright: Sony BMG

Natalie Gauci, the 26-year-old singer of Maltese descendant who won Australian Idol, will be performing on the final night of the Malta Song for Europe festival on January 26, the MaltaSong board announced today.

Natalie’s guest appearance was made possible after a joint effort between timesofmalta.com, MaltaSong and the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.

Natalie won Australian Idol on November 25 when she beat bookies' favourite Matt Corby, and has since been signed by one of the major record labels – Sony BMG. She also released her first single, Here I Am, which made it to second place in the Australian singles chart after just three days. The video to the single will be available on this site in the coming days.

Natalie’s first album with Sony, Natalie Gauci: The Winner’s Journey was released on December 8. Samples of the tracks of her album are available at: http://www.timesofmalta.com/nataliegauci

Natalie has been on a national tour since January 2 and has performed at various prestigious Australian venues among which were two performances – yesterday and today – at The Palms at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.

Speaking to timesofmalta.com, Ray Gauci, her father, said that, “the audience just loves her”. Mr Gauci, originally from Marsa, said that the show at The Palms was fantastic, and that the “crowd at her hometown are wonderful people… they embraced her with open arms”.

She has another performance tomorrow at the same venue and will then fly to Tasmania where she will give a performance at the Derwent Entertainment Centre.

Having a jam-packed agenda, Natalie will be flying out of Perth on January 24 immediately after a performance at the Burswood Theatre. She will be landing in Malta the following day. This will be her first time here.

timesofmalta.com had interviewed Natalie Gauci soon after she won the Idol competition, and since then, timesofmalta.com, MaltaSong Board and the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund have been working hand in hand to make her visit possible.

After the deal was finalised Natalie screaming with joy, telling timesofmalta.com, “this is such fantastic news. I can’t wait to be there”.

The board also announced the 17 songs which will feature in the semi-finals on January 24 (See separate story).

I am so elated that Malta has appreciated the talents of our Natalie Gauci from Australia who won the Australian Idol 2007. This invitation to sing in Malta is sublime and honourable for this Australian-Maltese who went to Hell and back to win the Australian Idol. Her tears and effort paid well. It was a thrill to see the members of the Victorian Community Council and others from the Maltese community in Victoria in the background to barrack for this courageous girl. I prayed that she will be recognised by our beloved Malta and grant her wish to be able to sing in Malta. I hope she will cherish her heritage. Please take care of her while in Malta. I feel strongly that Natalie will fall in love with Malta and her people but Malta will even fall in love with her more. She is a Diva with a golden D. Well done to the organisers of the Song for Europe Festival, timesofmalta.com and the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund... you have won more respect for recognising one of our own. I truly wish you all success. I wish I could have my birthday wish on the day she will be in Malta and join in all the joy which the Maltese audience will share. Awguri to all.
