An eight-month training programme to train Maltese personnel ahead of Malta’s membership of the Schengen borderless area has been completed.
The programme, made possible thanks to a 56,000 euro grant by the EU, included training of police officers by experts from the Italian S.I.R.E.N.E. Division of the International Police Cooperation Service in Rome.
Training seminars on the Schengen Information System were also held for members of the Judiciary and Customs officers.
Maltese police officers also gained hands on experience in Rome.
“Thanks to this assistance from the European Union, the Police International Relations Unit is now in line with the commitments called for under the Schengen Convention, and therefore able to honour its obligations under the same convention,” the police said.
