Last January, the students' Ekoskola committee at St Ignatius' College primary, Siġġiewi, decided to begin making compost at school.
The committee bought a compost tank and placed it in a sunny corner of the schoolyard, prepared handouts explaining how to produce compost and what organic material to use, photocopied the information with the Siggiewi council's help, and distributed it to pupils to take home and to display on notice boards. An assembly was also held on the subject to explain to all pupils and school staff the compost-making process.
Pupils and staff started to bring material from home, and twice a week during break-time they used to top-up the compost tank with the material and stir its contents. This process was repeated for five months until the tank reached the required level.
The compost was ready towards the end of the year, and was used to re-pot some of the school plants, and to plant new trees and saplings to enhance the school environment.
