Motherwell midfielder Phil O'Donnell died after collapsing on the pitch during the Scottish Premier League match against Dundee United yesterday, police confirmed. The 35-year-old was taken off the pitch on a stretcher 12 minutes from the end of the match, which Motherwell won 5-3.

O'Donnell's nephew David Clarkson, who also plays for Motherwell and had scored two goals in the match, was substituted shortly after O'Donnell had collapsed.

"He collapsed during the game and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital and died a short time later," a police spokesman told Reuters.

O'Donnell had also played for Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday.
