I recently admired the Neapolitan crib at Auberge de Castille. Climbing up marvellous stairs of the Auberge, they reminded me of the Scala Regia staircase at St Mark's Monastery, Rabat. It is the prototype of the Castille main staircase and can be compared to the staircase of the Royal Palace of Brussels.

It is described as scenografico ceremoniale and also reminds me of the library staircase of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, built by Baldassare Loghena.

From the archives held at St Mark's Monastery, it is known that the community invited three architects to compete to design the new priory. Andrea Belli's submission was chosen. Previously, a study had been carried out on the seminary of Mdina (now Cathedral Museum). The Prior General of the Augustinian Order in Rome, submitted Belli's plan for the judgment of the well-known architect Valvasorio. It is the prototype of the Auberge de Castille staircase.

Both staircases of St Mark's Monastery and the Auberge de Castille bear the architect's identity: the balustrades and frames in the walls with a cockle shell in the corners. The same can be said for the pilasters.
