Labour Party leader Alfred Sant, 59, will be hospitalised tomorrow for surgery, the MLP said.

A medical bulletin will be issued by the medical team after the operation, party general secretary Jason Micallef said.

Messages wishing Dr Sant well poured in soon after the MLP issued the statement. President Eddie Fenech Adami spoke to Dr Sant on the phone while Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi wrote him a note to express his solidarity and wish him a speedy recovery.

Best wishes were also expressed by Nationalist Party general secretary Joe Saliba and Victor Galea, secretary of Alternattiva Demokratika.

The MLP's executive and its parliamentary group in a statement this afternoon expressed their support and solidarity with Dr Sant and augured him a quick return to work as party leader.
