MIFSUD-CHIRCOP. On December 19 at St James Hospital, Sliema, Dr GEORGE Mifsud-Chircop, aged 56, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Marlene née Said, his daughter Berenice, his son Jerome, relatives and friends. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 8.30am at the Mosta parish church where Mass praesente cadavere will be said, followed by interment at the Mosta cemetery. No flowers by request, but donations to the Dr Gorg Mifsud-Chircop Memorial Lecture Fund (University of Malta) will be appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

SANT FOURNIER. On December 18, at Mater Dei Hospital, DOLLY, née Toledo, aged 60, passed away peacefully after a long illness, so bravely borne always with a big smile, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her irreparable loss her beloved and devoted husband Victor, her dearest daughters Jackie and her husband George Preca, Sue and her husband Vanni Laurenti, her precious grandchildren George, Luke and Michela, her mother Malou Toledo, her brothers Peter and his wife Diana, Raphael and his wife Pippa, her sister Stefanie and her husband Albert Rossi, and Stella, her in-laws Alfred and his wife Lillian, Karm and his wife Rita, nephews and nieces, besides many relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 8 a.m. for Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish church, Balluta, St Julians, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to the Life Cycle Organisation will be greatly appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

Gozo Youth Band To Usher In New Year

The Gozo Youth Wind Band and Orchestra will be ushering in the New Year with a concert at Independence Square, Victoria on January 1 with the participation of soprano Georgina Gauci and tenor Mario Portelli.

The concert will be held with the collaboration of the Victoria local council.

Before that, the band will be taking part in Christmas With The Musicals, organised by The Helping Hands Group on Sunday at the Grapes Wine Bar, St George's Square, Victoria at 8 p.m. with the participation of soloists Mario Portelli, Christine Camilleri, Stephanie Portelli, The Helping Hands Chorus and The Helping Hands Theatre Experience Children's Choir.

On January 12 the band will give an innovative concert, The Gozo Youth Wind Band - Showcase Spectacular at 8.30 p.m. again at the Grapes Wine Bar. The concert will consist of a rendering of blockbuster and pop arrangements coupled with traditional British music, reminiscent of the BBC Proms Final Night at the Royal Albert Hall.

On February 10 the band will present its annual concert at the Oratory Don Bosco during the feast of St John Bosco, featuring a repertoire acquired for the event.

Support Service From Microsoft

Microsoft is providing a new free support mechanism to local users.

Customers can now call the local Problem Resolution Centre on freephone number 8006 2037. The new service is to be utilised for assistance related to problems with specific symptoms.

This freephone number can be called through any Go fixed line from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays only.

Microsoft Malta reminded customers that Microsoft Software bought as part of a new computer must be activated.

Many users will only have to activate their product one time for the life of the product.

However some users may have to activate the product again if they make a significant number of changes to their computer. Microsoft software activation can easily be done through the internet or by calling the local 24-hours Product Activation Centre on freephone 8006 5432.

British High Commission

The consular section at the British High Commission will be open from 8.45 a.m. to noon and from 12.30 to 2 p.m. between Monday and Friday as from January 1.

The visa section will continue to be open from 9 to 10.30 a.m. from Monday to Friday.

Consular customers are advised to make use of the passport/consular services after 10.30 a.m. to avoid unnecessary delays. Urgent consular cases will take priority over visa and routine consular cases.

Apart from the observable public holidays, the British High Commission will be closed on Monday, Wednesday, December 31 and January 2.

Drawing, Filigree Courses

The Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce will again be holding the Portrait and Figure Painting and Drawing course under the guidance of Eman Grima, running over 10 sessions of two and a half hours each once a week from 5.30 to 8 pm, commencing in January.

Participation is restricted and costs Lm30 (€69.88) for society members and Lm40 (€93.17) for non-members.

The society will also be launching a new course in gold filigree, introducing participants to the art of filigree work giving them the opportunity to manufacture a Maltese cross in gold filigree.

The course fee is Lm9 (€20.96) and will run over 13 hours spread over five sessions and will be restricted to a maximum of six participants. Material is supplied by the society and finished work will remain its property although the students will be given the opportunity to purchase it.

Mastermind At City Of London

The City of London bar, in St Julians, will be hosting a Christmas quiz in the form of Mastermind on December 27 at 9 p.m. Twelve contestants will sit on the hot seat one after the other and answer general knowledge questions in one minute flat. Participation is free but donations will go to the annual orphans' Christmas party. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third placed qualifiers. The bar will be open as usual but silence is expected during the quiz. Those wishing to take part are asked to contact Julian Borg on 9923 3516.

Bus Service

There will be no scheduled bus service between noon and 3.10 p.m. on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, the Malta Transport Authority said.

On both days route buses will operate from Valletta to outlying termini and vice versa from 6 a.m. 

The service will be interrupted at noon and will resume at 3.10 p.m. from outlying termini to Mater Dei Hospital and at 3.30 p.m. from outlying termini to Valletta and vice-versa.

Children's Party

The sub-committee for the family within the Zejtun local council will be holding a Christmas party for children on December 29 between 2 and 4 p.m. at the Alexandria Hall, Zejtun. The Victoria and the Palace Hotels' annual trade party was held at the new V5 Bar at the Valletta Waterfront.

The trade party centred on an American theme, which included a feast of American type food.

An Elvis impersonator greeted guests at the door.

The guests were hosted by The Victoria and The Palace hotels' general manager Claire Xuereb and AX Holdings chairman Angelo Xuereb.

Curia Offices

All the offices of the Archbishop's Curia, in Floriana, including the marriages office, the administration section and the offices of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal in Valletta, will be closed for the Christmas festivities from Monday. All these offices will open again to the public on January 4.

Fund Raiser

A display by the Malta Police Force and a vintage car show are among the highlights of Fund Fest 2007 - a fund raising activity for families at the grounds of the Ursuline Sisters' Home for Children at Guardamangia on Saturday and Sunday.

The event, which is in aid of the Ursuline Sisters, also includes a car wash, a bazaar and entertainment.

The activity will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. Events on Sunday will start with Mass. For further information or to make a donation call the Sisters on 2123 6630.

Weekend Break Winner

Mary Scicluna of Qormi is the winner of Agenda Bookshop's promotion on textbooks for a family weekend break at the Fortina Resort and Spa in Sliema.
