Malta's GDP per inhabitant expressed in terms of purchasing power standards last year reached 77 percent of the EU average, unchanged since 2004, EU figures show.

Luxembourg led the scorechart with its GDP per inhabitant soaring two-and-a-half times above the EU 27, while Ireland was nearly 50 percent above average.

Holland, Austria Denmark, Sweden and Belgium were between 20 percent and 30 percent above average.

Next came the UK, Finland, Germany and France which recorded figures between 10 per cent and 20 percent above average while Spain, Italy and Greece were around the average.

Slovenia and Cyprus were about 10 percent below, followed by the Czech Repubic, Malta and Portugal, between 20 percent and 25 percent below.

Romania and Bulgaria were around 60 percent below the EU27 average.
