To avoid falling prey to dishonest merchandising and selling practices, you should first be aware of common ploys. These are guidelines that will be of help:

1. Beware of free or bargain offers. Remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

2. Avoid any deal that must be made immediately - even if it sounds genuinely attractive.

3. Beware of products, especially food supplements or drugs, that make unrealistic promises. Research them carefully before risking your money or health.

4. Politely, but firmly, get rid of fast-talking salespeople who come to your house unannounced or contact you by phone.

5. Don't give your credit card number to any telemarketing or direct mail firm unless you know the firm is legitimate.

6. Buy defensively. Keep a file of advertisements for products you intend to buy. Such advertisements are legal documents in court and you would do well to have them in hand, just in case.

7. Deal with local and/or reputable firms whenever possible.

8. Keep abreast of fraudulent schemes and practices.

The existence of fraud is a fact. The best protection consumers have is their own ability to evaluate carefully every purchase they make to understand what they're buying and under what terms they are required to pay.
