Armed robbers crashed a stolen four wheel drive vehicle through the front window of an Ikea store in Madrid packed with Christmas shoppers, firing shots and escaping with thousands of euros, media reported.

In a statement Ikea said the robbers got away with under 5,000 euros ($7,328) and that no one was hurt in the incident which lasted for just 90 seconds.

The robbery took place at Ikea's store in Vallecas in south-east Madrid when four hooded people jumped out and fired shots into the air.

Spanish press said there were more than 2,000 customers and 200 staff in the store which has only been open a few months.
