The Medical Association of Malta yesterday elected its new council following a three-week postal ballot.
The council will meet for the first time next Friday and decide on who will take the posts of president, vice president, general secretary, international secretary and treasurer.
The three officials that sat on the previous council and again contested got the highest number of votes. Martin Balzan had served as general secretary, Gordon Caruana Dingli as vice president and James Pocock as international secretary in the previous council, which was elected in 2004.
The association will have a new president as Stephen Fava did not contest since the MAM statute states that a president cannot hold office for more than two terms.
A by-election might be needed since two doctors contesting the election received the same number of votes.
