Students following the architecture course at the University of Malta need more funding to cope with the expenses they incur during their course as the stipend and maintenance grant are not enough, architecture graduate Veronica Bonello said yesterday.
Speaking during yesterday's graduation ceremony at the university, Ms Bonello said that the design projects which the architecture students are expected to come up with during their course and especially for their thesis, are becoming increasingly expensive.
Great sophistication is expected from students' projects in their final year, with the expenses increasing further.
Moreover, she said, the faculty does not have enough space for these projects to be exhibited and the students frequently have to pay for another venue.
Ms Bonello also complained that very often, more emphasis is placed on the theory side of a university course when, in actual fact, the practical aspect is vital.
Tatjana Chircop, who graduated in Youth and Community Studies, expressed hope that various forms of arts, such as dancing, music and drama, are included in the educational system.
These still very much depend on the income and backgrounds of the student's family, she said.
Ms Chircop stressed the need for a structure which includes these art forms in primary and secondary schools.
