The IEEE Malta Section in collaboration with the Chamber of Engineers recently organised a lecture about "Technology evolution and the biz of telecommunications".

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Roberto Saracco, under the distinguished lecturer programme of the IEEE Communications Society. The event was coordinated by Dr Ing. Saviour Zammit, who is the professional development officer and treasurer of the IEEE Malta Section. The event was open to members of the IEEE and the Chamber of Engineers.

Prof. Saracco gave a one-and-a-half-hour lecture on the current state of the art in telecommunications and his view of the future. He discussed scenarios that are expected in the infrastructures and services. Examples discussed by Prof. Saracco included the increase in memory chip capacity which in the future will store thousands of movies on a piece of plastic; flat screens that will soon reach the maximum resolution of eight megabits at which the human eye cannot distinguish the screen from reality making the viewer part of the story; the infrastructure that will take the fibre to the home allowing high bandwidths and speeds, and more.

As regards the business side in telecommunications he stressed that divergence is key to success as the customer has a fixed amount to spend on these services.

Prof. Saracco is well known in the international arena and is currently responsible for long-term research and scientific communications reporting directly to the chief technology officer of Telecom Italia.

The IEEE Malta section forms part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) an international organisation based in the US which incorporates engineers, ICT professionals, and technologists. The Chamber of Engineers is the professional body representing the engineers in Malta.
