The USS Gettysburg (CG 64) is in Malta for a visit of a few days.

This is the ship's third visit to the island since it was commissioned in 1991. Crew members will be dedicating some of their free time to community relations projects at a local charitable institution during their stay.

The ship's name, Gettysburg, commemorates the pivotal battle of the American Civil War fought from July 1 through July 3, 1863.

USS Gettysburg and her sister ships are designed to protect aircraft carrier battle-groups from all threats - air, surface, or subsurface.

The commanding officer is Captain Richard A. Brown, United States Navy.
