University students should have better opportunities to get together to learn from each other and understand the value of other disciplines, David Torpiano, who yesterday graduated Bachelor of Arts in theology and human studies, said.
Speaking during yesterday's University of Malta graduation ceremony, Mr Torpiano said that although university courses were of high quality, there is little internal dialogue between one faculty and another.
The university was facing cultural challenges questioning man's identity and his personal and social dimension. It should give students a holistic formation which makes them more mature and responsible, able to make an authentic contribution to society.
Nursing studies graduand Justine Mangion, a former student of the Institute of Health Care, explained how being cut off from the university's main campus proved to be a great handicap to students' participation in the University's social life, hindering their networking with students in other disciplines.
She said one of the difficulties encountered by many students was having to distinguish between theory and practice. This problem could be greatly reduced through the introduction of trained mentors who would facilitate the process of practical learning through their real-life experience.
