Schools promote healthy eating

Pupils at Paola A Primary School last week put aside their books and pencil cases for a day to enjoy healthy eating and fitness, which started with a healthy breakfast with cereal, milk and fruit, followed by fitness and fun sessions. The children also took part took part in various games and exercises, including rolling on mats, walking with quoits on their heads, passing balls, and lifting a parachute.

While the children were enjoying themselves, their parents attended a talk on eating healthily given by Petra Mallia from the Health Department and enjoyed aerobic lessons led by the school's PE teachers.

Finally, at a cookery session, the children and teachers made fruit salads, healthy sandwiches using brown bread, tomatoes and tuna, and green salads. Yoghurt, fruit and milk were also used to make tasty and colourful fruit drinks.

Meanwhile as a continuation of its healthy lifestyle programme, Sir Adrian Dingli, Girls' Junior Lyceum, Pembroke, last month organised two other activities. During a 'cereal day' all the students received and tasted various cereals with milk and an explanation about their importance in our diet was given, sponsored by various private companies. On St Martin's day, the school sold traditional Maltese borza ta' San Martin containing healthy fruit and nuts.
