A bus driver was fined Lm200 and banned from driving for seven days for causing a tourist's death when he ran over her five years ago.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli found that the tourist, Scottish Janet Laing, died as a result of Mario Mallia's negligent diving.
The incident occurred on January 25, 2003 at about 1 p.m. when Mr Mallia was diving a bus into the Qawra terminus. The woman was crossing the terminus when Mr Mallia ran over her.
A passenger on the bus testified that the driver was nervous thoughout the drive from Valletta to Qawra. He was chatting with a bus ticketing inspector and did not see the woman cross the road.
After evaluating the evidence, the magistrate found Mr Mallia guilty of the charges.
Police Inspector Paul Bond prosecuted.
