Mayor wins libel case
The editor of Il-Mument has been ordered to pay Lm300 in libel damages to the former mayor of Zebbug.
Magistrate Silvio Meli found that the article Tbazwir finanzjarju fil-Kunsill Lokali ta' Haz Zebbug (Financial tampering at the Zebbug local council) published in Il-Mument on November 9, 2003 was libellous and defamatory.
The court ordered editor Victor Camilleri to pay Joseph Ciantar, the then mayor, Lm300 in damages after it turned out that the allegations of financial tampering made in the article were unfounded.
