Police fired tear gas in running battles with rioters late  in a suburb north of Paris where two youths died in a weekend crash with a police car.

A Reuters witness said about 100 riot police were attacked with firecrackers and responded with tear gas, stun grenades balls and paint guns, designed to identify troublemakers. The witness said a car, a garbage truck and a police vehicle were set on fire during Monday's violence, which erupted despite an appeal for calm from President Nicolas Sarkozy.
