A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit near the city of Iwaki in Japan, the US Geological Survey said, revising it to a slightly stronger quake than it initially reported.

The quake was centred 42 miles (68 km) northeast of Iwaki, Honshu, and struck at 1351 GMT at a depth of 16.7 miles (27 km), the USGS said.

The agency earlier said the quake was a 6.0 magnitude, and was centred 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Iwaki, striking at a depth of 24.2 miles (39 km).
