Admissions to Mt Carmel Hospital have dropped by 10 percent to 1,100 over the past year thanks to better medical care and community services, Health Minister Louis Deguara said.
Speaking at the hospital, where he launched a new plan for mental health care, the minister said he hoped Parliament would be able to enact a Mental Health Act by the end of the year.
Mt Carmel Hospital CEO Edward Borg said services would continue to be improved through an expansion of the psychiatric commuity service, and hostels woud be opened to enable long-term patients to integrate in society.
Dr Deguara said the country was seeing an increase in cases of dementia since people were living longer. Drugs and other circumstances where also leading to more young people seeking mental health care.
