Two seminars entitled 'Are you ready for your newborn?' and 'Are you concerned about your child's safety?' will take place at the Eden Cinemas on November 24 and December 1 respectively, between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

These are the first in a series of educational training seminars on childcare being given by professionals in their field - a midwife, a paediatrician, and a child first-aid expert - organised by The One, in collaboration with Eden Leisure's Mums' Club.

The first few days after a newborn's arrival are usually an intensely emotional and confusing time for the parents, whose minds are usually full of questions and concerns.

The first seminar will discuss the first few days of life, to help parents understand each other and their newborn child and adapt to the changes in the smoothest ways possible so as to reduce stress that can build up in the family.

As it adapts to the new world, a newborn child goes through many changes, many of which are physical and worry parents. The seminar will make parents aware of characteristics and peculiarities of newborns, including their natural instincts and reflexes, so that they avoid unnecessary stress and worry and can enjoy their child's growth and development.

The seminar's last session will explain and discuss baby blues and post-natal depression, two conditions that most consider to be the same thing, so that parents recognise the symptoms and immediately tackle the situation.

Participants will be able to discuss their concerns with professionals.

The second seminar focuses on parents' first and most important job - child safety - providing essential information about illnesses, dangers, first aid and emergency skills for children.

Knowing something about common and uncommon childhood illnesses can make parents feel more confident to handle them as they arise, and how they can be prevented.

Another seminar session will look at common childhood injuries, making parents aware about dangers in and out of the home, some of which are overlooked as they are not as evident. Many accidental childhood injuries can be avoided. To counter the natural tendency of thinking 'It won't happen to me', parents will learn and practise basic principles of effective injury prevention.

The seminar's last session will teach parents first aid for children and emergency skills to enable them to be prepared and take appropriate action in time instead of panicking helplessly in unforeseen circumstances.
