Many tourists and local people on country walks along the Victoria Lines in Dwejra keep asking me, as a historic heritage lecturer, how it is that the authorities have neglected such a beautiful place with its lovely views, and how come they have let it get so dirty.

In AD 60 St Paul called the locals "a barbarous people". I do not know if he was correct, but I see people going out for picnics and discarding their rubbish outside all the time.

One cultured tourist told me that as the Victoria Lines was a heritage site, I should write to Queen Elizabeth stating the facts about certain historic properties, for example the stolen gates and all sorts of rubbish and burnt cars.

The only attractive spot was an old flower bed which my wife and I were asked to embellish ages ago and we did. The rest is a pigsty. I got a nice letter back from Her Majesty who said she was sorry to learn about the vandalism caused to the Queen Victoria Flowerbed in Dwejra.
