The second coming
KRS Fourth Malta International Film Festival
The golden age of Italian film is generally accepted as the 1950s and 1960s. The names of great directors like Fredericko Fellini, Antonioni, De Sica and Sergio Leone were bywords for quality movies. After their heyday the Italian movie scene went rather quiet. But just lately a new wave of Italian filmmakers have sprung into prominence.
Following the Spanish Film Festival, between November 18 and 20 the St James cinema will be hosting an Italian Film Festival. Five films will be shown: La Donna della luna (Lady of the moon)1988, Tre Giorni d'anarchia (Three days of anarchy) 2004, Bonus Malus 1993, Mio fratello è figlio unico (My Brother is an Only Child) 2007, Manuale d'amore 2 (Manual of Love) 2007 and Ho Voglia di Te ( I Want You) 2007.
La donna della luna Co-written & directed by: Vito Zagarrio, stars the Milan born actress Greta Scacchi. It charts the progress of an American woman driving through Sicily to her father's funeral who gives a cocky, streetwise kid a lift. Things get a bit interesting when this kid tries it on with the sophisticated woman. The cast also contains young Luca Orlandini, pop musician Tim Finn and Mike Magistro.
Tre Giorni d'anarchia, written and directed by: Vito Zagarrio tells of a tempestuous 72 hour period in 1943, after Mussolini's fall from power and just before the arrival of the Allies. Set in a Sicilian village the film homes in on the ambivalent allegiances of various members of the community as they await "liberation". The film stars Enrico Lo Verso as a student returning to his village at this time.
Bonus Malus was again directed by Vito Zagarrio, who this time also co-wrote the script. Released in 1993 it stars Claudio Bigagli, Gigio Alberti and Felice Andreasi
Mio fratello è figlio unico, directed by Daniele Luchetti is described as a fun panoramic snapshot of politically engaged Italian youngsters in the 1960s and 1970s that is not only a portrait of its time but also of the Italian youth of today. The fact that the film is also surprisingly funny, good-looking and showcases the talents of rising star Elio Germano is something of a bonus.
Manuale d'amore 2 was co-written and Directed by: Giovanni Veronesi. This was a big hit in Italy and deals with a series of relationships... both straight and gay. It stars Carlo Verdone, Monica Bellucci, Sergio Rubini and Elsa Pataky.
And finally: Ho Voglia di Te, directed by Luis Prieto, tells what happens when a macho guy becomes entangled with an independent minded girl.
It has a cast containing the talents of Riccardo Scamarcio, Laura Chiatti, Katy Louise Saunders and Ivan Bacchi (II).
