The number of registered unemployed stood at 6,629 last month, (5,988 in Malta and 641 in Gozo), a decrease of 555 when compared to the same month last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

In the 12 months to September, both islands experienced a decline (-499 in Malta and -56 in Gozo).

The unemployment rate for September is not available yet.

In June, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.3 per cent of the labour supply. The rate for men stood at 4.9, while that for women stood at 3.1 per cent.

The long-term unemployment rate, referring to people who have been registering for work for more than 12 months, stood at 1.7 per cent.

The unemployment rate among older workers (45 and over) was 3.8 per cent while the unemployment rate among young people (under 25) stood at 5.5 per cent.
