A few days ago an English tourist couple writing in The Times praised the 1st Hamrun Scout Group for excellent behaviour at their annual summer camp at Xemxija where the couple were lodging. They were so impressed that in their letter they said that these Scouts were a credit to Malta.

It seems that this title sticks when mentioning the 1st Hamrun Scout Group, at least that was the opinion of the audience at the Military tattoo held recently, when it gave a great ovation to the participation of the group's band. It was no mean feat for the 1st Hamrun Scout Band to perform alongside the Central Military Band of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, the Durham ACF Borneo Band of the United Kingdom, the Dutch Pipes and Drums Band with Highland Dancers of the Netherlands, the Malta Police Band and the Malta Armed Forces Band. And it is to their credit that this band of youths gave an impeccable performance.

The sight of the Maltese flag carried by the scouts coming through the smokescreen as the curtain lifted, accompanied by the flair of the bagpipes and the beating of the drums was quite spectacular. They merited the enthusiastic applause accorded by the audience. And when they marched and counter-marched in military precision while playing their instruments, the audience burst out again in cheers and applause.

This was the first time that a scout band from Malta took part in the Military Tattoo and the responsibility of the 1st Hamrun Scout Band was quite onerous as the group was representing the whole Scout Movement in Malta. But they came out with flying colours, a credit to them, to their leaders, to the Scouts Movement and yes, truly a credit to Malta.
