September was good to Land Rover too as it celebrated the most successful sales month in its entire history. Last month, nearly 26,000 cars around the world were sold, up 34 per cent on September 2006 sales and the best performance in 714 months of business.
The Freelander 2, Land Rover's award winning compact 4x4, and the fuel-efficient diesel-powered Range Rover have attracted buyers in global markets.
Sales in September reached 25,933 and it means Land Rover has sold 167,400 cars so far this year, up 15.7 per cent on last year.
The Russian and Chinese markets did particularly well as the emerging markets showed their appetite for Land Rover - sales for the month rose by 105 per cent in Russia and 249 per cent in China.
Land Rover's managing director Phil Popham said: "We can now approach our 60th anniversary next year with confidence. I want to see the business move forward responsibly, profitably and sustainably.
"We're on track with plans to fit technology to improve the environmental performance of our cars and we've given a hint of new, exciting design. A great future is shaping up."
Last month Land Rover announced that a stop-start system would be fitted as standard in European Freelander 2 TD4 manual derivatives within 18 months, improving fuel consumption by 10 per cent to 41.5 mpg and cutting CO2 emissions by seven per cent to 179 g/km.
