As in previous years, the Circolo Gozitano will be celebrating Jum Ghawdex on Sunday, the anniversary of the capitulation of the French garrison to the Gozitans under the leadership of Archpriest Saverio Cassar in 1798.

This day symbolises the beginning of a new era for Gozitans - the proper identity and aspirations towards the status of an island region.

To commemorate this day the Circolo Gozitano is holding A wreath-laying ceremony in front of the monument to Archpriest Saverio Cassar on Independence Square, Victoria at 11 a.m. will be followed by a fanfare, a brief speech by the president of the Circolo and a dedication by poet Joseph W. Psaila.

The conferment of Gieh Ghawdex awards will be held at Palazzo Palina, Ta' Cenc, during a commemorative dinner. The public is invited.

The Gieh Ghawdex award is given to Gozitans who have distinguished themselves in their profession, vocation or their field of practice.
