World Arthritis Day held last Friday, kicked off the Bone And Joint Decade Action Week, first marked in 2002.
The Bone And Joint Decade is an initiative of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation, spanning from 2000 to 2010.
World Arthritis Day was supported by several international rheumatology associations, such as the American College of Rheumatology and the European League against Rheumatism, of which the Maltese Society for Rheumatology is a member, and organised by a patient association known as Patients With Arthritis And Rheumatism In Europe (PARE).
Diseases that affect bones and joints, collectively known as arthritis and rheumatism, are among the most common chronic diseases.
It is estimated that one in four European adults is affected by arthritis and one out of five Europeans is on long-term treatment for the disease.
The theme chosen for this World Arthritis Day was Small Things Matter.
