An International Maltese Linguistic Society will be set up today at the University of Bremen, Germany.

The society, Ghaqda Internazzjonali tal-Lingwistika Maltija, is being set up on the initiative of a German professor of linguistics, Thomas Stolz.

An international conference on various aspects of Maltese is being held in Bremen, marking this occasion. The conference started yesterday and ends tomorrow. Both the conference and the society are being hosted by the University of Bremen, where linguistic research on Maltese and languages of the Mediterranean have a long tradition. The conference is organised by the Institute of General and Applied Linguistics (IAAS) of the University of Bremen.

The society is being set up with the aim of encouraging the study of Maltese linguistics on a global scale.

Some 21 papers are being read and discussed in the conference. The subjects of the papers are very diverse and deal with aspects ranging from phonology and morphology to variations in the language.

Anyone interested in knowing more about the society can send an e-mail to ghaqda@unibremen.de.
