Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday announced that people who receive a service/s pension will retain Lm200 of their NI pension.

This measure, he said, would mostly benefit those with the lowest pensions and, if Malta continued to maintain its momentum of economic growth, this step would be repeated in the coming years.

He pointed out that the cost for the country for such pensioners to received their full two-thirds pension would reach Lm17 million, which would rise to Lm24 million within a few years.

The country could not absorb such an increase in one go, the Prime Minister said.
