The chief officer on board the Iranian tanker Iran Susangird lost three fingers when the ship was effecting a crew change at about 5.40 p.m. yesterday.

The tanker was off Grand Harbour and the boat involved in the crew change was the utility vessel Maria-C.

It seems that the personnel basket the chief officer was in, hit the ship's side injuring him as he was about to be lowered onto the workboat.

An Armed Forces of Malta helicopter airlifted the man to St Luke's Hospital.
