Donations received by Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija, following the theft and slaughter of its animals, will go towards the enhancement of the park's human-animal interaction programme.

General manager Mark Sultana said the funds would also be used to improve the park's security and ambience for the benefit of the animals and the public.

Earlier this month, a deer was brutally killed and 13 animals were stolen from Ir-Razzett in an incident that shocked the public, especially since the animals were used for therapy with disabled children.

Three men were charged in court on Friday in connection with the incident. Nearly all the stolen animals that have been returned, Mr Sultana said.

Mr Sultana said a number of individuals and corporate and public entities have expressed support both verbally and financially.

He thanked all those who have shown support to the park "during this disheartening period", especially the police.

He said everything was in place to welcome more than 350 children with disabilities from various schools across island to start the winter programme tomorrow.

These include horse-riding, multi-sensory therapy, arts, crafts and pottery and human-animal interaction. The activities provide a holistic development to each child, such as enhancing their self-esteem, concentration, creativity and physical development through what is know as leisure education.
