Skolasport opens

Skolasport opened yesterday, offering children under 10 and youngsters aged 11-16 the opportunity to learn a wide range of outdoor and indoor sporting skills and practise them at various different sporting venues.

Organised by Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport (KMS), it offers under 10s an intensive programme of physical education, basic skills, active play, educational gymnastics and dance, while 11 to 16 year-olds have over 25 team to individual sport activities to choose from.

Participants can practise their sport at their favourite or closest sport centre. Venues include the Cottonera Sports Complex (indoor), the Marsa Sports Complex (outdoor), the University Sports Complex (indoor), the National Pool Complex (outdoor), and this year also St Benedict's College, better known as Tal-Karwija Sports Complex (outdoor).

In addition to the many benefits of regular exercise, the programme enables children and youngsters to mix socially in a healthy way, gain self-confidence and observe discipline.

Andrew Decelis, KMS director said: "Our main aim is to provide children with a holistic educational programme that improves their sporting abilities and gives them the opportunity to experience a variety of team and individual sport."

A local spokesperson for Kellogg's, which has been sponsoring Skolasport for the past nine years, commented: "Skolasport has been the starting point for many Maltese children in their discovery and enjoyment of sport. Through Kellogg's sponsorship, we are contributing towards Skolasport's overall improvement and to healthier Maltese generation."
