A short course - Introduction to Translation - organised by the Foundation for International Studies (FIS) will provide some insight into translation processes for those who wish to pursue a career in professional translation.
The two languages are Maltese and English.
Despite its introductory nature, the short course will provide ample opportunity for students to carry out practical work and digest theoretical principles.
The theoretical aspect of this translation course includes an introduction to methods of translation and comparative studies of expression in Maltese and English.
Methods of research and compilation of terminology will also be discussed. From a practicality perspective, this short course will provide translation of texts of a technical nature, including areas of financing, law, medicine, science and technology. Translation of some literary texts will also be attempted.
This introductory course is suitable for anyone who works with languages and for those who would like to learn what goes on behind the scenes when a translation from a source language to a target language takes place.
Sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, between 5.30 and 8.30 p.m. Dr Charles Briffa is course co-ordinator.
