The European Athletic Association (EAA) honoured its top athletes for 2007 yesterday during a gala night at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

The event formed part of a three-day Calendar Conference which comes to a close tomorrow at the New Dolmen Hotel.

Croatian high-jumper Blanka Vlasic and javelin champion Tero Pitkamaki, of Finland, were named best athletes for 2007.

Italy's long jump athlete Andrew Howe and British heptathlete Jessica Ennis won the 2007 Rising Star Award.

They were presented with their awards by EAA president Hansjorg Wirz.
