Barry Collier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of NSW, Australia, visited the Water Services Corporation's desalination facility in Pembroke.

The government of Australia is considering reverse osmosis technology to meet the ever-rising demand for water, especially in view of the severe drought that has afflicted the country for a number of years.

Reverse osmosis plants have been operating in Malta for over 25 years. About 57 per cent of Malta's tap water comes from seawater via reverse osmosis.

The corporation is in the process of upgrading its membranes and energy-recovery systems that will increase product output, efficiency and water quality.

Mr Collier said the Australian authorities will study Malta's experience carefully. He was particularly interested in how the WSC has managed to reduce the amount of electricity required for desalination, the corporation said.
