Norman Grech came up with his theory that the George Cross was put on the national flag by Lord Gort, then Governor of Malta who brought the medal in his pocket.

In my letter to The Times (April 28) I referred to the "mystery" of how the George Cross found itself our flag. I wrote that nowhere is it explained in contemporary history. No official sources or readers have since given me an adequate reply. It is quite surprising to note that Mr Grech says it was Lord Gort who decided to have the George Cross on the national flag. I invite him to state where he got this information from, to enable us to trace this document. I feel certain that no such document or proclamation is to be found in our national archives.
