Maltese touch in Polish park

Part of a park in the Polish town of Zdunska Wola has been dedicated to Malta complete with an eight pointed cross and an adaptation of the Maltese Neolithic Temples.

The mayor of the town - which lies about 100 miles west south west of Warsaw - had asked ambassadors and honorary consuls resident in Poland to come up with ideas on how each of the 27 EU member states can best be represented in the park.

These symbols of the EU states were officially inaugurated yesterday. The honorary consul for Malta in Poland, Krysyna Mikulanka who was here on a short visit last week said: "Working on this idea for the past year, we have tried to bring the most visible signs of Malta to Poland".

The spot dedicated to the island has a Maltese cross and four benches incorporated in stone portals recalling the Neolithic temples.

Earlier this year Ms Mikulanka was the seminal contact for the director and producer of the TV thriller series on Polish TV Kriminalni when they came here to film part of the series. She said plans were in hand to interest other film companies to use the island as a backdrop to their stories.

"Following the screening of the Kriminalni episodes shot in Malta, individuals and groups have expressed a strong intention to visit the island."

During her most recent visit, Ms Mikulanka toured the islands searching for particular locations with which she is trying to entice companies to film here.

"Next month, a Polish crew will be coming over to film for the cinema," she said.
