A 62-year-old-man from Valletta is being held in custody after he was found in possession of about half a kilo of heroin at the Malta International Airport yesterday, the police said.

The man, who arrived on a flight from Rome, was stopped by members of the police Drug Squad and the Customs Enforcement Unit.

The heroin was found in a packet in each of his shoes with one packet containing 226 grammes of the drug and the other having 271 grammes of the substance.

Police investigations revealed that the man, who is expected to be arraigned shortly, had visited Turkey where he spent several days.

Duty Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, who was informed of the find, has appointed experts to assist in an inquiry she opened.

This is the third heroin find since last week when 170 grammes were found in Hamrun.

On Monday, 11.5 kilos of heroin were intercepted at the Malta International Airport.
